AI is everywhere in conversations about websites: tools that write text, generate images, answer customers and summarise search results. Some of it is genuinely useful for a small business. Some of it creates more work than it saves. Here is a practical view.
How AI is changing search
The biggest change for most businesses is not on their website but in search. Google now shows AI-written summaries above many results, and more people ask AI assistants for recommendations directly.
To be found in these answers, the basics matter even more:
- clear pages that answer specific questions directly;
- accurate, consistent business details everywhere online;
- a complete Google Business Profile with genuine reviews;
- real expertise: your own experience, examples and photos.
Our article on SEO in 2026 goes into this further.
Where AI genuinely helps
- A first draft of text. AI can help you get started on a service description or an FAQ answer, which you then edit into your own words with your own details.
- Ideas and structure. Questions customers might ask, headings for an article, ways to explain something simply.
- Proofreading and tone. Making text clearer and shorter.
- Alt text and summaries. Describing images or condensing long documents, always checked by a person.
Where to be careful
- Publishing unchecked AI text. It can be generic, repetitive or simply wrong. Search engines and customers both value content written from real experience.
- AI-generated photos of "your work". Customers expect photos to be real, and fakes damage trust when spotted.
- Chatbots giving answers on your behalf. They can be wrong about prices or availability. We look at this in does your website need a chatbot?
- Personal data. Be careful what customer information you paste into AI tools.
Is your website ready?
You do not need to add AI features to your website to benefit from AI. What helps most is a website that is fast, clearly structured and honest about who you are, which is exactly what search engines and AI tools are trying to find.
We use AI tools ourselves to work faster, while every website and every word we publish is checked and decided by a person. If you would like to know how your website looks to search engines today, try our free website check or get in touch.
