Most business owners want two things from their website that used to pull in opposite directions: to update it themselves without calling anyone, and for it to stay fast, secure and on-brand however often it changes.
Modern websites solve this by keeping content (your words, photos, prices, opening hours, reviews) separate from design (how it all looks and works). You will sometimes hear this called a "headless" content management system, or CMS.
How it works, in plain terms
Your content lives in an editing area: simple forms where you type text, upload photos and save. The website then takes that content and displays it in the design that was built for it. You cannot accidentally break the layout, because you are only ever changing the content, never the code.
What this means for you
- Change everyday things yourself: opening hours, prices, a new photo for the gallery, a new review, this month's offer.
- No risk of breaking the design. A long heading or a large photo is handled by the website, not squeezed into a page by hand.
- The site stays fast. Pages are still built and served the efficient way, rather than assembled by plugins on every visit.
- Fewer security worries. The editing area is separate from the public website and has far fewer moving parts than a typical plugin-based setup.
How it compares to WordPress
WordPress lets you edit almost everything, including the layout, which is powerful but also how many sites end up slow, inconsistent or broken after an update. A content-only editor is deliberately narrower: you get control of what changes often, and the design stays protected. We compare the options in WordPress, Webflow or a custom website.
When you need it, and when you do not
If your content changes rarely, it is often simpler to send changes to whoever looks after your site; on our Care Plan, small changes are included every month. If you update photos, prices or listings every week, being able to do it yourself becomes worth it.
What we are planning
We are planning an editing area for the websites we look after, so clients can update galleries, reviews, opening hours and text themselves while the design stays exactly as approved. If that sounds useful for your business, let us know.
